UNDERGRADUATES

Students of this subject will have to apply the knowledge they have gained in several areas of medicine for the benefit of the community. They are taught the preventive, curative and promotive aspects of every illness. They are also encouraged to involve in the community during their Compulsory Rotatory Residential Internship (CRRI).

POST GRADUATES

Training in Community Medicine aims at nurturing Primary Care Physicians who can recognize and mange common health problems in the community. The Community-oriented Primary Care Physician will have the ability to identify, prioritize and manage the health problems of the community. He / She would be an effective leader of the health team at primary care level.

URBAN HEALTH TRAINING CENTER

UHTC is located at Anakaputhur in Kanchipuram District. It is located at a distance of 7kms from Sree Balaji Medical College and Hospital. Population covered in field practice area of Anakaputhur is 45562. The centre is under the Department of Community Medicine, Sree Balaji Medical College & Hospital .

RURAL HEALTH TRAINING CENTER

RHTC is located at Sripuram Padapai, which is at a distance of 25 kms from Sree Balaji Medical college & Hospital (SBMCH). The Population covered in field practice area of RHTC is 21,187.

Core Objectives of the centre are

1. Curative and Preventive Services

  • Outpatient Clinical, Speciality, Preventive, Curative services to the patients in the nearby areas
  • Free medicines (antibiotics, antipyretics, antihistamines, vitamins, basic anti-hypertensives and anti diabetic drugs)
  • Referral services to the main hospital, Sree Balaji Medical College & Hospital.
  • Speciality clinics
  • Special/Periodic Camps

2. Training

  • Undergraduate Medical Students during Clinical posting including Family survey and COP during their IV, VI & VII semesters.
  • Hands on Training to CRRIs in curative and preventive services, health education etc
  • Postgraduate training

3.Survey and Research Activities

  • Family survey, Field survey and Community survey by Undergraduate and Postgraduate students
  • Hands on training for doing projects at the center
  • Need based survey/projects by Postgraduate students
  • Maintenance of family card, maternal and child card.

4.Health education & Health Promotion activities

  • Counseling to patients
  • Periodic health education to the patients on need based topics

2. Laboratory services

  • Basic laboratory services including estimation of haemoglobin, total and differential counts, urine analysis and blood sugar estimation done by a qualified lab technician

Post Graduates and Faculty are engaged in various research activities pertaining to current Public Health problems like Diabetes, Hypertension, Obesity, HIV, Malnutrition etc. and its challenges. Research papers are presented by our PG’s and faculty members in various National and International Conferences held within and outside our country.
